Barcelona

Rebuild

PE17 reinterprets a characteristic apartment in Barcelona’s Gràcia district: a compact space filled with local identity. The home preserves key elements of the neighbourhood’s architecture: the interior patio, wooden-framed openings and the traditional Catalan vaulted slab, all of which keep its original spirit alive.
The renovation aims to honour this essence while adapting the apartment to contemporary living, enhancing natural light, circulation and the connection with the exterior. The result is a renewed home that remains faithful to its past.

The project focuses on strengthening the main living area: a combined living, dining and kitchen space that opens onto a south-east facing balcony. This orientation brings soft daylight throughout the day and offers a direct visual connection to Barcelona’s urban landscape. A careful reorganisation of the layout creates a more fluid and cohesive environment. The architecture builds upon the apartment’s original elements to deliver a clearer, more functional way of living.

The Catalan vaulted ceiling and the balcony opening are central to the project, highlighted to define the character of the new communal space. Materials and details reinforce this original identity, adding warmth and texture to the interior. The remaining program includes a bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and a spacious bathroom with direct access to the interior patio, improving ventilation and bringing a sense of calm. PE17 blends architectural heritage with contemporary comfort in a compact, characterful home.
